Learn to play guitar

My true love. I have been playing guitar for 30yrs and both teaching and performing for 20. Students will learn both contemporary and classical styles to reach their desired level of proficiency. Beginner students are welcome! Due to the fine-motor development required to see real progress with guitar, lessons are available for student beginning in 2nd Grade, younger students may begin their music journey with piano. I want to see success and joy come from music, not frustration. I utilize Socratic teaching methods using careful questions to guide students discovery and understanding of the instrument.

What to expect: Beginners

First things first, we need to get acquainted with a new instrument, what everything is called and why, how to hold it and how to generate sound & silence. You’ll learn the important basics of how notes lay out between the strings and across the neck. You’ll learn how to tune the instrument both by ear and using an electronic tuner. You’ll learn how to fret notes and strike the strings with a pick and your fingers to get a clear, beautiful tone. You’ll learn to play melodies and riffs from songs you love and will learn HOW to practice for maximum effectiveness. You’ll learn how to read various kinds of guitar notation, including chord and fretboard diagrams, tablature, chord symbols, rhythm slashes, standard notation and Nashville numbers.
